Highways of Bergen County, New Jersey

US 1 is the original length-of-the-east-coast highway, running from Key West, Fla., all the way to Fort Kent, Me., a total of more than 1800 miles. However, the alignment through northern New Jersey is not the original alignment of the “Post Road”. Originally, US 1 headed for the Jersey City ferry terminal, and later the Holland Tunnel. But at some point after the George Washington Bridge was opened, US 1 was rerouted up Tonnelle Avenue and Broad Avenue to a junction with the “new” NJ 6, which was built expressly as a bridge approach road.

Meanwhile, US 9 was established as a road from the southern tip of New Jersey at Cape May across into New York and from there up to the Canadian border on the way to Montréal. (After the Cape May-Lewes, Del. ferry was started, a section of road in Delaware between US 13 and the ferry landing also received the designation US 9.) Rather than designating another road, US 1 and US 9 were established as running concurrently through northern New Jersey and across the George Washington Bridge into New York, where they split again: US 1 eventually finding the Post Road again, US 9 running up Broadway and eventually crossing the Hudson again at Albany. A separate alignment, US 9W, was established on the west side of the Hudson.

The mile markers on this log are from the point where US 1 crosses the Delaware River at Trenton – the only markers actually displayed on the road, even though US 9 is concurrent through all of Bergen County and US 46 makes it a triplex in Palisades Park.
