These pages outline the various county roads in Bergen County, New Jersey, along with the state highways that are completely or partially within the county.
Bergen County roads have numbers ranging from 2 through 159, in addition to six routes in the statewide 500 series of county-maintained state secondary highways.
Even numbers generally denote east-west roads, with the numbers increasing as you go north. Odd numbers generally denote north-south roads, with the numbers increasing as you go west. There are a few exceptions to this rule of cardinal direction. Many of the routes recently renumbered were changed in order to correspond with this rule.
The original county route system, established in the 1920s, had numbers between 25 and 134. At some point, probably in the 1960s, there was an additional designation of primary routes 2 through 21 which overlaid existing numbers and were often signed instead of the root number. These are the numbers most often signed on the county roads, and the county highway inventory now uses these numbers instead of the original numbers given to these highways. However, the route logs maintained by the state (see below) do not acknowledge this system. These logs use Standard Route Identifiers that generally correspond to the original county highway numbers.
There are some roads signed in the field with an S prefix, with S meaning “spur”; these roads generally intersect their parent at some point (or they used to before the parent became a state highway or 500 route). Spurs follow no rule of cardinal direction. Routes beginning with S have all been renumbered in recent years. Some have been given their own numbers, while others have the suffix A, indicating an auxiliary route. In some cases, A routes are orphaned stretches of road; in others, they are roads annexed to the system to provide access where routes are one-way or turn-restricted.
Please note that many roads renumbered in recent years have not been signed with these numbers; in many cases the original numbers are still posted.
Inventories are usually from south to north or west to east; exceptions are noted.
Also included here are the various state highways that run in Bergen County. These range from Interstate highways to two-lane state roads that sometimes also bear county markers.
The source for most of these route logs is the NJ Department of Transportation’s Straight Line Diagrams. These are supplemented by auxiliary maps and personal observations.
For the sake of manageability, I have listed on each route log only the following features:
By convention, stuff (town names, road names, etc.) on the left side of the road is in (parentheses), while stuff on the right side is in [square brackets]. This way, if you’re driving down the road in the direction of inventory (usually west to east or south to north), the indications line up with the way you’re facing.
Many thanks to Dan Moraseski (whose highway logs, which are now maintained by Steve Alpert, are a valuable resource) for ideas and inspiration.
