Highways of Bergen County, New Jersey

US 46 was built in the early 1930s as NJ 6, a road connecting the George Washington Bridge with US 611 in Warren County, at a bridge that is now used by NJ 94. It gained a US designation in the late 1930s, and the NJ 6 designation was dropped in the 1953 state highway renumbering, when duplicate numbers were eliminated. (An existing NJ 46 in south Jersey was changed to NJ 77.)

Today, US 46's western terminus is at I-80 and NJ 94 in Columbia; as a result, the 72-mile road no longer meets the criteria to be signed as a US highway, but it remains signed as such. After more than half a century known as "46", the state would likely rename the road NJ 46 if its US highway designation were ever stripped.

By a legislative act, the road is also called the United Spanish War Veterans Memorial Highway. However, old street names still exist in some sections. These are noted.

The mile markers here are from the road's western origination in Knowlton Twp, Warren Co.
