Rutherford High School

Rutherford High School opened in about 1895, and it moved to this site in 1922. The front building visible from Elliott Place is the original 1922 building, including an auditorium at one end and a gymnasium at the other. Both rooms are still used, and the school offices are in this building.

In 1959, the junior high schools (7th to 9th grade) at Pierrepont and Union schools were consolidated into a new building on Mortimer Avenue, called Rutherford Junior High School. The building was attached to the high school, and while the junior high used the high school auditorium, varsity sports moved into the junior high gym.

In 1975, the district restructured again, with the two buildings at Elliott and Mortimer becoming a single four-year high school. Pierrepont and Union schools then served from kindergarten through eighth grade.

There have been several additions to Rutherford High School. In the 1980s, a pool was added to the end of the old high school building nearest the old gym. In the 2000s, additional science labs and classrooms were tacked on to the area behind the old office, and connecting corridors between the two buildings were added.
