After 15 loyal years, Park Sunoco ends its sponsorship. The Rutherford Fire Department agrees to sponsor a team.
The Leagues divisional format is abandoned in favor of a system in which the top three teams in each league, plus ties, enter a single-elimination playoff. The league champion is the survivor of the regular 16-game season, but any of the playoff teams has a chance at the town championship.
The district title belongs to Rutherford American, but the squad is eliminated in the sectional at Secaucus, ending plans to travel to the states at Manchester Township (west of Toms River).
