The League adopts a divisional format. Three teams from each league are placed in a division, and a best-of-three playoff is held between the division winners for the league championship. The format lasts for eight years.
For 1986 only, teams played their two division opponents three times each and the other nine clubs once each, for a 15-game schedule. The previous format was restored in 1987.
