They squeeze a lot of people into Little Rhody. Sometimes they squeeze a lot of innings into ball games there, too. Take 18-Apr-1981, when the Pawtucket Red Sox hosted the Rochester (N.Y.) Red Wings. They played until four in the morning, but they were still tied. Pawtucket eventually won it, 3-2 in 33 innings. Cal Ripken was playing for Rochester. Maybe that’s where he got the endurance to play 2632 straight games for Baltimore? Wade Boggs was in the game for the Pawsox, too. McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, renovated in 1999, stands to this day as a part of baseball history.

Note: Rhode Island counties no longer have any administrative function. The historic counties are retained for purposes of census division. The county seats listed are the historic county seats. Washington County is commonly referred to as “South County” by the locals and even by tourist agencies.
