State Highways of New Jersey

NJ 55 is a freeway that was originally designed to connect the Cape May shoreline with the approach roads to Philadelphia, as an alternative to Delsea Drive, NJ 47. Only about 40 of the originally proposed 60 miles were built, however, as cost and environmental concerns prevented the road from being continued all the way to the shore. The mile markers on NJ 55 begin at 20.00, as the road was supposed to continue about another 20 miles southeast.

It is possible that NJ 347, the bypass of Delsea Drive in Maurice River and Dennis, was legislated to occupy the NJ 55 corridor. That highway, while signed as a state highway, is county-maintained.
