State Highways of New Jersey
US 322 runs from Cleveland to Atlantic City, passing through Chester, Pa., and then over the Commodore Barry Bridge into New Jersey, eventually connecting to the Black Horse Pike.
The Commodore Barry Bridge opened only in 1974. Prior to that, US 322 entered New Jersey on a ferry between Chester and the Bridgeport section of Logan Township, in Gloucester County. Bridgeport got its name in part because proposals for some kind of bridge to Chester had been floating around since the 19th century. US 322 was designated along the Chester-to-Bridgeport ferry and to the road between the ferry landing and Crown Point Road, NJ 44 (now US 130), in 1936; in 1939, the State Highway Commission assumed jurisdiction over Ferry Road and designated it as NJ S-44 for its status as a spur from NJ 44. The commission also legislated the previously unassigned number NJ 51 to apply to the rest of the course of US 322 between Bridgeport and the Black Horse Pike, NJ 42, in the Williamstown section of Monroe Township, still in Gloucester County. However, jurisdiction over NJ 51 remained with Gloucester County until 1955, by which time the NJ S-44 and NJ 51 designations had been removed in favor of merely calling it US 322. This time lag did enable the designation of SR 536 over the two highways in 1952; US 322 and SR 536 share the designation from Bridgeport to Williamstown to this day. Upon the opening of the Commodore Barry Bridge, both US 322 and SR 536 were shifted onto the bridge; Ferry Road was orphaned by the bridge opening and the construction of the interchange with US 130, but it remains under state jurisdiction as NJ 324, with exactly two roads connecting to it.
Converting NJ 51 / US 322 into a freeway, or otherwise expanding its capacity, has been discussed since 1932. Actual plans floated by the New Jersey Expressway Authority (which would have extended the freeway to the Atlantic City Expressway), NJDOT, and the New Jersey Turnpike Authority were all rejected between 1970 and 1995. However, there is a current proposal to bypass the historic, and congested, Mullica Hill section of Harrison Township.
This log contains only the section of US 322 between the Commodore Barry Bridge and the junction with Harding Highway, US 40, in Hamilton Township, Atlantic County. US 40 and US 322 are concurrent between the junction and Atlantic Avenue in Atlantic City, where both routes end; mileposts on that stretch belong to US 40, and so that is where one can find that log.
