Highways of Bergen County, New Jersey

(NJ 445)

The Palisades Interstate Park Commission was founded in 1903, with a goal of saving the cliffs from overdevelopment. As might be expected, the people who really wanted the area preserved were the people who could most easily look at the view – New Yorkers. The Rockefellers took up the cause, and as a result, not only was the New Jersey section of the Palisades Interstate Park preserved but parks such as Tallman Mountain and Bear Mountain in New York were established. Cliff-top development continued on a limited scale through this time – a date of 1917 can be seen on leftover ruins of a mansion in Tenafly – but all but a select few structures were torn down by the early 1950s.

By the early 1950s, a roadway that would connect the George Washington Bridge with eastern Rockland County more efficiently than US 9W was desired, and the park commission began work on the Palisades Interstate Parkway. The road runs from Fort Lee to Bear Mountain, and as with all New York parkways, commercial vehicles are not permitted.

A short stretch of the northbound lanes in Alpine, from the on-ramp at Interchange 2 to the off-ramp for the State Line Lookout, was built atop Henry Hudson Drive. The drive was the original park road, starting half a mile south of the George Washington Bridge and running along the base of the Palisades, past Ross Dock, the Englewood Boat Basin, and Alpine (Huyler’s) Landing before climbing the cliff to State Line Lookout. The original road, now closed to motor-vehicle traffic but open as a footpath, continues north to the state line. US 9W used Skyline Drive (which no longer exists, having been largely supplanted by the PIP) and then Henry Hudson Drive through the State Line Lookout area.

While the PIP is controlled by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, NJDOT has assigned it reference number 445, the next number in sequence after NJ 444, the Garden State Parkway. The half-mile ramp connecting US 9W with the Parkway in Fort Lee is designated NJ 445S. This spur is plotted below as well.
