Highways of Bergen County, New Jersey

NJ 208 was plotted in the late 1940s as NJ S-4B, a spur off NJ 4 at Fair Lawn to Wyckoff, Oakland, and perhaps Ringwood, Sterling Forest, and Monroe, where it would meet up with the existing NY 208. For that reason, the road was renumbered NJ 208 in 1953, the year that New Jersey eliminated spur route numbering.

The road is built to near-expressway standards, much like NJ 3 and also NJ 4 east of 208, except that local zoning has kept the road relatively free of commercial development. At times, 208 resembles a parkway. A dangerous traffic light at McBride Avenue in Fair Lawn (milepost 2.44, between Fair Lawn Avenue and Maple Avenue) was eliminated in the 1990s.

In keeping with the Bergen County focus of this site, the section of 208 in Hawthorne, Passaic County, is not listed here.
