The original CR 69 hugged the river starting in North Arlington. In the early 1960s, the state reassigned CR 507, which had been on the east side of the ridge, to the Passaic River route along CR 69. The section that remains, and which was recently redesignated as CR 77, begins on the Maple Avenue bridge from Paterson to Fair Lawn and bounces off CR 507 as it turns off River Drive onto Maple Avenue.
