A Tribute to a Baseball Family

The bank building across the street displays the final count of Cal’s consecutive-game streak.

Memorabilia from the Ripkens’ careers as youngsters is included.

The museum pays tribute to Cal Sr., Cal Jr., and Billy, as well as the whole family.

Quick Facts:
The Ripken Museum was founded in Aberdeen, Md., the hometown of the Ripken family, in 1996 to honor not only Cal Ripken Jr., the Hall-of-Fame-bound infielder, but his father Cal Sr., who coached and managed the Orioles for many years; his brother Billy, who played in several organizations, including that of the O’s; and their entire supportive family.

As of Sep-2001, the museum was still rather small, located in a section of the Aberdeen city hall, but it was looking to add exhibits and expand. In the meantime, admission was a reasonable $3 for adults, making it a worthwhile stop on a trip between Philadelphia and Baltimore. Alas, the museum had disappeared a few years later.

Two miles away, across I-95 at exit 85, a new ballpark known as Ripken Stadium has risen. It opened in 2002, hosting the former Utica Blue Sox.
