Honoring the Commerce Comet

Quick Facts:
Commerce, Okla., is an old city just north of Miami along the path of old Route 66. A youngster by the name of Mickey Mantle was signed right off the Commerce Tigers high school team after the 1949 season and made his major league debut with the New York Yankees two years later, becoming one of the most beloved sluggers in baseball history.

I first passed through Commerce a mere five days after Mantle’s death in August 1995. At that time, aside from the main drag through town having been named Mickey Mantle Drive, nothing in town commemorated the Commerce Comet. That changed within the next decade, as the high school baseball field was redone and dedicated as Mickey Mantle Field, and a statue of Mantle was placed outside the field along Route 66 for all to see.
