Shepherd Stadium

The field has been reconfigured for an annual 12U tournament.

Quick Facts:
The City of Colonial Heights built this ballpark after the second World War mainly for amateur baseball, but two minor leagues came calling and placed teams here in the 1950s. One came in for the 1951 season, while the other was the relocated Colts, who were displaced from Richmond after the also-relocated Baltimore Orioles moved their Triple-A team to Parker Field and called them the Virginians. The Colts lasted one season in Colonial Heights, which is 25 miles south of Richmond, before moving on.

Shepherd Stadium continues on as a venue for high school and American Legion ball, and when I visited the field had been reconfigured to accommodate a 12-and-under tournament. This appears to be an annual event, and the layout of the playing surface readily accepts the transformation. Meanwhile, a college summer league team, the Tri-City Chili Peppers, has also taken up residence at the facility. Hopewell would be the third of the Tri-Cities.
