Especially during the championship game, thousands of spectators enjoy the game from the outfield. |
The complex now includes a second game field, to accommodate a World Series that has expanded from 8 to 16 teams, as well as numerous practice fields, dormitory buildings that are also used for summer camps, the Peter J. McGovern Little League Museum, and the headquarters of the organization, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2014.
One of the seven games I attended here no longer counts. Three weeks after the 1992 tournament concluded, an investigation revealed that the winning team, from the Philippines, had improperly substituted eight players onto their squad, several of which were allegedly ineligible by reason of being overage as well as residing outside of the local leagues chartered area. Little League invalidated the result and awarded the title to their final opponent, from Long Beach, Calif. That team, featuring future major leaguer Sean Burroughs as an 11-year-old, returned the next season and earned a legitimate championship.
