At the University of Oregon, baseball had been a club sport for several decades. Athletic director Pat Kilkenny sought to rectify that, and he had a new stadium built for baseball adjacent to Autzen Stadium, the Ducks’ football home. The park opened to a sellout crowd in February 2009, named PK Park in Kilkenny’s honor.

With structural issues dogging venerable Civic Stadium and the school district pondering its demolition, the Eugene Emeralds struck an agreement with the University to play at PK Park, effective in 2010.

Aside from the pitchers’ mound (and the plate area during the professional season), the entire playing surface is artificial turf. This gives the Ducks a chance to play home games early in the season even if snow lingers in the Willamette valley.

The first game I showed up for at PK Park, in August 2013, was called for rain in the fourth inning and so I did not count it as a game attended. Accordingly, this was not a park attended, either, until I was able to return on a clear night in July 2017.
