The Rutherford Athletic Club, a private organization, originally owned this land, but it deeded the field to the Borough of Rutherford as a park in 1919. At the time, it was known as Rutherford Field. It was the home of Bulldogs football and baseball until the 1950s; when St. Mary High School opened in the mid-1930s, they started using the field as well.
In the 1950s, the Bulldogs moved their games to the newly developed Memorial Park across town. Soon thereafter, this field was dedicated to Gerald Tamblyn, a former borough recreation commissioner who had also worked with YMCA youth programs in town. Prior to the development of the West End, a field near the current Memorial Park had been known as Tamblyn Field; this dedication preserved Tamblyn’s legacy.
Most of the baseball action here has been on the main diamond; however, youth leagues have played on the softball diamond (field #2) since the 1950s. The smaller field is visible from home plate of the main field. The football field runs across the outfield of the main field and extends to the outfield of the smaller field.
