Home of the Wildcats

Entrance to the Bunn High School field, Aug-2020.

The field, as seen from down the first-base line.

Limited capacity is evident here, along with a tree-lined backdrop.

Quick Facts:
Back in 1998, I drove down from New Jersey to attend my uncle’s funeral in Wilkesboro, N.C. The service was on a Friday morning, which meant I had the weekend to myself. I decided to head toward the Outer Banks and see what that part of the state was all about. Since I wasn’t driving all the way across that day, I booked a room for overnight in Rocky Mount and took some back roads, including NC 98, which runs from Durham through Wake Forest, the town north of Raleigh where Wake Forest University started before it moved west to Winston-Salem in the 1950s.

As I crossed into Franklin County, I passed through the small town of Bunn and rode past the high school. I noticed that there was a flurry of activity at the baseball field, so I pulled over. Sure enough, the Wildcats were about to start a game against nearby Franklinton. This baseball fan had come prepared with a scoresheet in case a game broke out somewhere along the way, so I jotted down some lineups and enjoyed a Wildcat victory, one of many on their way to that season’s conference championship.

The grass field is well-maintained but has short outfield dimensions; a few balls that might be easy outs in some yards go for home runs here. Seating is also modest, with just a couple of short bleachers in an area behind the plate. This is unsurprising, as Bunn plays in the second smallest school classification in North Carolina.
