McCrary Park

Entryway to McCrary Park, Jul-2022.

The main grandstand.

The artificial turf is new for 2022.

Quick Facts:
The owners of the downtown McCrary mills built this park in 1946 to allow for outdoor recreation for their workers, whose numbers had swelled after the second World War. The mill also built a gymnasium at its mill site that was the equal of any in the area and even drew college teams for occasional games.

While McCrary Park has never seen professional baseball, and the industrial leagues faded away not long after the field was built, it has been a city park for many intervening years, hosting high school and American Legion ball for much of that time. The facility was suitable for a team in the college summer Coastal Plain League to start using it, and so Asheboro got the Copperheads.

The Copperheads rebranded as the Zookeepers for 2022; the North Carolina Zoo is located just outside of town. The field also started receiving upgrades, including artificial turf and new dugouts prior to the 2022 season. The main grandstand is still original, though plastic seats have been installed. There is talk of replacing the grandstand as well, but that depends on the availability of structural steel to complete the job.
