Riverfront Stadium

This WICHITA sign is visible from the US 54 freeway, Sep-2021.

A handsome seating bowl that can accommodate Triple-A ball is in place.

Looking out at the field as a suspended game is completed.

Riverfront Stadium was scheduled to open in April 2020 to host the Wichita Wind Surge, who are moving from Metairie, La., a New Orleans suburb, to the former site of Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The park’s debut was delayed due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak that forced a shutdown of most large gatherings in March. As a result, the Triple-A team never got to play here, but the franchise was awarded a team in Double-A Central when Major League Baseball reorganized the minor leagues for 2021. The park did host the National Baseball Congress tournament in 2020, a function its predecessor had also accommodated.

I was not able to get into Riverfront Stadium on my 2020 visit, when I took these photos. I did get to a game late in the 2021 season, and I found it to be a typically serviceable modern park – certainly an improvement over what stood before.
