Mercer University, which dates back to the first half of the 19th century, opened this baseball field in 1962, adjacent to its football stadium. The field was named for head baseball coach Claude Smith upon his retirement following the 1977 season. Significant renovations completed in time for the 2017 season were funded in part by OrthoGeorgia, an orthopedic medicine provider, in return for their name on the facility.
The seating bowl, including seat backs directly behind the plate and bleachers down the first- and third-base lines, can hold 1,500 spectators. In addition, many spectators tailgate and watch the game from beyond the right-field fence.
