Georgia Institute of Technology, nestled among Atlanta city streets on the west side of the Downtown Connector (I-75/85), has utilized this ball field since 1930, when the land was graded and dedicated following the schools appearance in the 1929 Rose Bowl football game. While the grounds have been used continuously since, the original stadium was torn out when 5th Street was extended in 1971. (That street now loops around the field and is designated Ferst Drive.) A donation from A. Russell Chandler facilitated the construction of a new permanent stadium in 1985; it was rebuilt in 2002.
The ball field features asymmetrical dimensions. While it reaches 409 feet in left center field, the right field power alley is only 353 feet from the plate thanks to the encroachment of Fowler Street.
One unusual feature of Yellow Jackets games is the seventh-inning stretch. Rather than playing Take Me Out to the Ball Game as is common at many ball fields, Jackets fans sing along to the 1970s novelty hit Dead Skunk by Loudon Wainwright III.
