Pirate Field is the home of Pensacola State (formerly Pensacola Junior College) baseball. When a new team started in the Southeastern League for the 2002 season, the Pirates allowed the Pelicans to play there. The Pelicans were successful enough that they moved to a larger facility at the
University of West Florida
. The continued success of the Pelicans ultimately led to their demise, as organized baseball arrived in a
new ballpark by the bay
in 2012.
