Home of the Panthers

Entrance to the Florida International University baseball stadium, Apr-2022.

A handsome seating bowl, but utterly devoid of shade.

Getting ready to start an inning.

Quick Facts:
Florida International University was established in 1965 as one of a number of new public research universities opening throughout the Sunshine State to accommodate the burgeoning college-age population. The institution accepted its first students in 1972 after largely building out its campus in the mile-square University Park section of Dade (now Miami-Dade) County, south of the Tamiami Trail (US 41) and east of the Homestead Extension of Florida’s Turnpike, a section that also includes the county fairgrounds and a youth sports park. While the area has a Miami mailing address, it is technically outside city limits by about three miles.

While the school’s baseball field has always been on the same site, the alignment was adjusted to the conventional northeast when the current stadium was built in 1995-96. The school briefly played at the Homestead sports complex built, but never used, for Major League spring training while an expansion of the facility took place in 2005.

The short-lived (one season) Florida Winter League placed a team, los Diamantes, here in 2009.

One significant drawback to the facility is that there is practically no shade. That makes enjoying a day game (typically on a Sunday afternoon) very difficult. In case of a rainstorm, fans are able to seek shelter on the stadium’s lower level, which includes the concession and souvenir stands.
