The Southernmost Baseball Field

Quick Facts:
In 1952 in the Florida International league, and in the 1970s in the Florida State League, minor league teams played at Wickers Stadium in this southernmost city in the continental United States. While the teams had several nicknames, including the Sun Caps, they were most often referred to as the Conchs, the name affectionately given to Key West natives for a century after settlers from the Bahamas landed on the island and brought their taste for the sea animal with them.

Wickers Stadium is long gone, although a piece of the outfield wall still stands at a community softball field about a thousand feet south of this ball field, home to the Key West High School baseball and football teams. This field, with aluminum bleachers, is irregularly shaped because the Conchs also use it for football. An outfield dimension of over 400 feet in the alleys shrinks to 360 at the 50-yard line, er, dead center field.

The Conchs boast several high-profile alumni, including pro ballplayers Boog Powell and Khalil Greene as well as major league umpire Rich Garcia. They have won 11 state titles in baseball over their history.
