Quick Facts:
Florida Gulf Coast University is the newest of Florida’s ten state universities, chartered in 1991 and opening its campus in 1997 on grounds that once belonged to Alico (Atlantic Land and Improvement Company), a citrus grower that was at one point a subsidiary of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Chief executive Ben Hill Griffin III arranged for the land to be donated for the campus; the approach roads to the campus are Alico Road and Ben Hill Griffin Parkway.

Swanson Stadium opened for the 2004 season, on the east end of the campus. It is sandwiched between the Alico Arena and the school’s softball stadium. The aluminum structure is elevated above the ground-level press box and two luxury suites, and it features fold-down seats in the center section and molded plastic seats in the side sections. The field faces due north, so the overhanging canopy does a fine job shielding the upper rows of the seating bowl from the high Florida sun. There is handicap seating at ground level, next to each dugout. The Eagles utilize the third-base dugout, which is generally out of the sun.

A small concession stand is located a good distance down the first-base line; it serves the softball field as well. The same building houses restroom facilities.

In their brief history, the Eagles have won the Atlantic Sun baseball championship six times, most recently in 2019. They won the title in three straight seasons, 2008-10, while hurler Chris Sale was in their rotation.
