Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the outgrowth of a flying school that began in Cincinnati in the 1920s. The school reopened in Miami in the late 1930s and transferred its operations to Daytona Beach, adjacent to that citys international airport (and the Daytona International Speedway), in 1965. The school began its athletics program in 1988 and transitioned to NCAA Division II in 2014, joining the Sunshine State Conference, generally regarded as one of the most competitive conferences in the division.
Sliwa Stadium, named to honor the contributions of the schools former president Edward M. Sliwa, opened in 2001 and faces due north, a slightly unusual orientation as most fields face more to the northeast. All the seating is in one bleacher directly behind the plate, with no accommodation for spectators down the foul lines as that is where the bullpens are located.
The university also maintains a campus in Prescott, Ariz., that hosts athletic teams playing in NCAA Division III.
