Quick Facts:
Florida Atlantic University was established in the 1960s as a step-up school where students in southeast Florida could continue their education after receiving associate’s degrees from a community college. Since then, it has grown into a full-fledged state university, with six campuses across three counties. The baseball team was begun in 1981 and, as of 2020, had not finished a year with a losing record since 1998. The next year, 1999, the team, then known as the Blue Wave, set a program record for victories, going 54-9 under head coach Kevin Cooney, whose teams won 748 games over 21 seasons at FAU after his Montclair State (N.J.) Indians won the 1987 Division 3 national title.

The baseball stadium at FAU is simple, with a main grandstand behind home plate that features stadium seating perched upon an aluminum structure. About eight hundred additional fans can and often do set up blankets or lawn chairs along elevated berms down both foul lines. For a game against the University of Miami in 2008, the Owls brought in over 2300 spectators.

While the Owls draw well for Friday and Saturday night games, Sunday attendance often lags because of the lack of shade at the facility. Even in February, the sun beating down on the field can make for difficult conditions for spectators. Then again, one cannot fault the locals for choosing to travel three miles east to the beaches of Boca Raton on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon.
