Behind home plate at Mulcahy Stadium, Jun-2019. |
An overview of the seating. |
Like many Alaska fields, artificial turf in the infield, grass in the outfield. |
Unfortunately, the usual best seats in the house, behind the plate, are unusually obstructed, not only by roof support poles but also by poles supporting the net that serves as a backstop. This obstructed view is visible to the right. As a result, many folks sit in box seats above either dugout or beyond, including in a beer garden down the first-base line. There is also significant bleacher seating that generally fills only for the annual summer solstice game or the Fourth of July game.
As with many fields in Alaska, the infield is artificial turf while the outfield is grass. Here, the turf also extends into foul territory down the lines, although the lines themselves are in the grass.
The Anchorage Bucs of the Alaska League have played here since 1964, and a second team, the Glacier Pilots, started playing here in 1969. Both continue to this day. Interestingly, each team has its own concession stands and box seats, and they even use different entry gates. The Bucs open the third-base gate, while the Pilots open the right-field gate closer to a number of other fields in the complex.
