New Jersey State Highway 17 begins at the Belleville Turnpike (NJ 7) in North Arlington and heads north through Lyndhurst on Ridge Road. It then turns right onto Rutherford Avenue, which it follows for a little less than a mile before looping back into Lyndhurst for the interchange with NJ 3. At that point, it is back in Rutherford, and it joins Meadow Road for several blocks before veering to the northeast and heading into East Rutherford.
The route was originally built between 1928 and 1934 as NJ 2, but the number was changed in 1942 to match NY 17, which it meets in Suffern.
