At the turn of the 20th century, Rutherford saw a squabble between residents who wanted to erect a Spanish-American War memorial and those who wished to dedicate something to Abraham Lincoln. The dispute was settled when, in 1903, a triangular block opposite the Park School (now borough hall) was designated as Lincoln Park, and the street alongside it was renamed from Chestnut Street to Lincoln Avenue, but Spanish-American War veterans were given space to install a cannon at the "point" of the park.
