A change in eligibility requirements implemented by Little League headquarters for the 2014 season made it possible for players who attend school within the boundaries of a local league to play in that league, even if their residence is outside the boundaries. The old rule, which was based strictly on residence, made it impossible for some players to participate in the same league as their classmates, and in some cases it meant they were not allowed to play in Little League at all because their home was not within any leagues chartered boundaries. The effect for Rutherford Little League was to permit players attending the Academy at Saint Mary to participate in the program, regardless of their residence, by presenting documents verifying enrollment in the school.
In softball, selected players of league age 12 became eligible to play at both the Major and Junior levels. The players, chosen through an evaluation, remained on their Major (12U) team and were eligible to be selected for the 12U tournament team, but they also got to play and practice with a Junior (14U) team, giving them an additional opportunity to improve their skills.
A softball safety initiative results in the implementation of face guards for all infielders (including the pitcher) at all levels beginning with league age 8 (Triple-A) and older. This echoes the increased use of face guards by pitchers and infielders in high school and college softball.
Both the 10U and 11U baseball teams win their respective section titles. The 10s lose their first elimination-round game but battle back with four straight victories to capture the district crown, including a dramatic 11-10 victory over Kearny in the championship game in Lyndhurst. They overcome another loss in the section tournament to take that title. The 11s sweep district play and then bounce back with four straight wins after a first-game loss in the section tournament in Carlstadt.
