In fact, it is a successful year all around for the tournament program, as nine teams (six baseball and three softball) participated and every one of them finished at .500 or better. The baseball side is led by the American 12s, who finish pool play unbeaten but suffer an extra-inning loss in the first game of the elimination round. The team rallies to win four straight games and claim the district championship.
On the local scene, the softball program restructures at the younger levels to align itself more closely with the baseball program. All players who have spent one year in Tee Ball now move up to a coach-pitch Double-A level for players aged 6 and 7. This makes the youngest player in Triple-A league age 8, and the result is improved balance and opportunity for learning at both levels.
Heather Sartori, a 12-year-old softball player out for the program for the first time, dies suddenly two days before Opening Day. To honor her enthusiasm for playing the sport, the softball program institutes a new post-season award to be presented in her memory, the Heather Sartori Love of the Game Award. The inaugural presentation is made to Noelle Lemaire of Lions.
