The League takes two safety initiatives prior to the start of the season. Batting helmets with face guards, mandated at the Minor League and Tee Ball levels since 1987, are now required for all players selected to Major League in 2009 and later. Also, the League will mandate heart protection for all pitchers.
In a revision to the rules regarding the Double-A Minor League, 7-year-olds are now permitted to pitch. For five years, coaches had pitched in all games at this level, which includes 6- and 7-year-olds. This move is designed to help develop pitchers at all levels of play.
For the second year in a row, the Rutherford High School baseball team conducts a Little League clinic. Fourteen former Rutherford Little Leaguers who are now on the Bulldog roster spend nearly two hours mentoring about sixty Little Leaguers.
The second phase of the field renovations is begun after the fall program ends in late October. These improvements add a batting cage / pitching alley / bullpen facility down the third-base line.
