Gary Tancredi Plumbing & Heating, a Rutherford Baseball Council sponsor since the 1970s and a Rutherford Little League sponsor for over a decade, becomes a Major League sponsor. Tancredi replaces Tommys Towing, which had sponsored an American League team from 1984 to 2000.
Keller-Depken Oil becomes the first team to win the town championship after failing to win its league title. Keller, who finished a game behind Elks in the standings, came from behind in each of its three playoff victories.
Once again, a district championship belongs to Rutherford, as the American League captured the 12-year-old tournament crown. The team swept four district games and then won its first sectional game on a 1-0 no-hitter by Matt Small before bowing.
