Opening day is held without a scoreboard, as contractors complete installation of a second Electro-Mech board donated by Boiling Springs Savings. The board works fine the next day, and for most of the next 15 years.
Pitcher Jim Papenberg of Kiwanis records five shutouts during the season, a league record which is even more remarkable because Papenberg was an 11-year-old that season. He would toss three more shutouts in 1982 and post earned-run averages of 0.33 and 0.38.
