The 1961 standings are some of the closest ever in league history. The American League finishes with just a four-game differential top to bottom, while the National League requires a tie-breaker to give Kiwanis the league title over Jaycees.
At the end of the season, the Rutherford Little League agrees to part from the Rutherford Baseball Council, citing an unfair distribution of funds. The Baseball Council, which was also running a Connie Mack team and later ran an American Legion team, continued to run the Farm League. Rutherford Babe Ruth would later leave the Council as well.
