Highways of Bergen County, New Jersey
County Road 56
Bergen County Road 56 is the Midtown Bridge in Hackensack and Bogota, and its approach roads.
The Midtown Bridge, which was built to accommodate the Public Service trolley service to the Hudson River, became a highway bridge in the late 1930s after the trolley line was discontinued. Main Street in Bogota, over which the trolley line ran, was extended over the trolley right-of-way to the bridge, and Salem Street in Hackensack was likewise extended. Another new road in Hackensack, Midtown Bridge Approach, carries eastbound traffic up to the bridge. The one-way stretch of Salem Street between the bridge and River Street is now CR 56A.
For the bulk of the highway previously listed as CR 56, see CR 12.
