Highways of Bergen County, New Jersey
County Road 30
Bergen County Road 30, formerly S-30, Rutherford Avenue, marked the northern edge of the John Rutherfurd farm in the first part of the 19th century. The spelling was changed to Rutherford after the U.S. Post Office opened an office called Rutherford in 1876; at the time the Ohioan Rutherford B. Hayes was running for president. Today, the road divides Rutherford Borough from Lyndhurst Township; ironically, Rutherford Borough is on the north side of the road.
Until the early 1950s, there was a bridge crossing the Passaic River between Clifton and Rutherford at Rutherford Avenue. The bridge was torn down after the NJ S-3 (now NJ 3) bridge was opened 200 feet to the north. Thanks to the reconstruction of that bridge and reconfiguration of the interchange, Rutherford Avenue is now one-way eastbound between Kearny Street and Park Avenue, where an exit ramp from eastbound NJ 3 merges in.
Beyond Ridge Road, Rutherford Avenue continues to the east as NJ 17.
