Connie Mack Field

Connie Mack Field, Apr-2014.

Quick Facts:
Cornelius McGillicuddy was born in the eastern section of Brookfield, Mass., in 1862. Known by the nickname “Connie Mack” for his entire career, he went on to play eleven seasons between the National League and the Players League, primarily as a catcher, and managed the Pittsburgh Pirates for his last three seasons there, through 1896. He then managed the minor league Milwaukee Brewers for four years before joining the newly-formed Philadelphia Athletics, who had joined the American League, a minor league that had declared major status for the 1901 season. Mack managed the A’s for fifty seasons, and was a part-owner the entire time (and its primary owner from 1937 to 1954).

The town of East Brookfield, which separated from Brookfield to become a separate municipality in 1920, honors its favorite son with this amateur field, across the street from the municipal building. Both facilities are on a street called Connie Mack Drive.
