Quick Facts:
Duane Banks Field on the University of Iowa campus received significant upgrades during a period ending in about 2001. A plaque at the facility acknowledges the contribution of former Major League pitcher Cal Eldred, a Hawkeye alumnus, toward the installation of field lights. Following my visit in September 2013, an artificial turf surface was installed (infield in 2014, outfield in 2015).

On April 30, 2008, the Quad City River Bandits, who had renovated their field in Davenport in 2004 and included a levee and flood gates as part of the construction, were forced to play an off-site game. It wasn’t because the field was flooded, but rather because the stadium was inaccessible thanks to the lack of levees elsewhere in the Mississippi River city. That day, before a crowd of about 200, the River Bandits defeated the Lansing Lugnuts, 4-3, at this field, giving this Big Ten facility a brief turn as a professional ballpark. The field reprised the role for a three-game series in May 2019, also against Lansing.
