Waterfront Park

Unassuming approach to Field 3 at Waterfront Park, Aug-2023.

The seating area just to the right of home plate.

The best view I could get of the playing field, from the third base side.

Quick Facts:
For a park, Waterfront Park in Martinez is impressive. The park is, indeed, on the Carquinez Strait, which juts off San Pablo Bay, the northern expanse of the larger San Francisco Bay. The city’s signature park has numerous ball fields, picnic areas, and even an area designated as a bird sanctuary. And with water levels apparently rising, the city plans to improve the infrastructure and raise the level of much of the marina area by several feet.

As a professional baseball field, the facility is lacking, but that is not uncommon for parks in the Pecos League. I was not able to access Field #3 at Waterfront Park, where the Sturgeon play, but it was clear from my walk around the area after the 2023 league season ended that this is a bare-bones location. That said, the Sturgeon, who were almost called the Mackerel but that was changed just before the 2020 season (which ultimately was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic), are in place and a somewhat rival to the more established San Rafael Pacifics, who joined the Pecos League a season later after a moderately successful run in the Pacific Association. There are other nearby teams in Dublin and Vallejo.
