The city of Chillicothe acquired the land for Shaffer Park in 1976 and quickly built a baseball field on the site, which saw some upgrades including stadium seating in 2002. The ballpark is tucked away in the southeast corner of the city. The tract also includes a small playground off the third-base side.

While there is no shade or shelter for spectators, there is a reasonable concession stand with significant variety including loose meat sandwiches, a Midwest staple. The Mudcats, the college summer league team that plays in the MINK League, also have a souvenir stand. The scoreboard is conventional, no video board in evidence. The field itself faces southeast.

The local high school has also seen significant success. The Chillicothe Hornets, who also use Shaffer Park for their home field, won the 2025 MSHSAA Class 4 championship.
