There was only one sighting of Spike the Dog this year, as his business agent was busy doing PA and stats for the North American Women's Baseball League, and Cone Man showed little interest in the duties of a mascot wrangler.
The Nashua Pride finally got local ownership. The new management came from the North Shore Spirit and brought a little of that franchise's aversion to the unplanned, but finally, on the annual "Halloween in August" game, the open invitation to fans to attend in costume was irresistible.
Spike showed up an hour early, worked the crowd for the entire game, and stayed to greet fans on their way out. In the meantime, the Pride Booster Club gave him an unprecedented invitation to help drag the infield at the end of the 5th inning. The dog took the field incognito, as the Boosters themselves were in clown suits. Other dogs in attendance included the frisbee-catching Skyy Dogg, two greyhounds from an adoption program at the local dog track, and two others with a spay-and-neuter service. Most of these were unimpressed by a six-foot-tall dog that didn't smell like a dog.
Management was enthusiastic and welcomed him back. One intern snapped a photo with Shag that he claimed would be a lock for next year's souvenir program.
