These are photos I took during the fall of 2007 of my then-hometown of Rutherford, N.J.
Known as "The Borough of Trees" and "The Oldest Borough in Bergen County," it was established in September 1881, comprising a section of what was then Union Township. (What happened to Union Twp? Well, the formation of the borough effectively split the township into a north/east section and a south section. The north/east section split off and became Boiling Springs Twp in 1885; Rutherford acquired part of its "West End" from Boiling Springs in 1890. In 1894, North Arlington Borough split off from Union Twp; the next year, Boiling Springs reconstituted as the borough of East Rutherford. Finally, in 1917, what was left of Union Twp reorganized as Lyndhurst Twp, which it remains to this day.)
I decided to photo-document the borough in 2007, photographing most of the public places in town (parks, schools, churches) as well as at least one photo on each street in town. Many of the street photos are of houses. Some of those are exemplar of the type of housing stock on a street; in other cases I selected a house because I knew the folks who lived there.
In December 2007, I distributed CDs that opened a browser window so that the photos could be "played" on a computer. I gave the discs to friends, many of whose houses I had included. In 2020, I decided to reformat the pages and upload the entire contents to the web - and here they are.
