The Rutherford National Little League All Stars were ousted from tournament play in the opening game Wednesday night at Little League field in Memorial Park by the Lyndhurst American All Stars 13-2.
Half a dozen errors by Rutherford and the pitching of big Lou Passaro for Lyndhurst, coupled with a barrage of hits won the game for Lyndhurst. Passaro got two home runs in the third inning, in which his team scored nine times.
Howe started on the mound for Rutherford, but gave way to Quinones in the third. Howie Russell took over the pitching chores in the third and did a creditable job, although Little League fans present said he had not pitched before.
Jim Parnofiello, Gil Steinberger and Kevin Loughlin hit successive singles in the third. Parnofiello scored, but despite a base on balls, Passaro got the side out with only the one run.
Aiding Lyndhurst in the 13-hit attack were Joe Cantrella, Phil DeFrino, and Ron Settembrino, each of whom smashed doubles. Settembrino had a good day at the plate, hitting safely three times in four trips, including a 3-run double.
