Mike Smith, pitching for the North Arlington National Little League All Stars, gave up only three hits to the All Stars of the Rutherford American Little League, and North Arlington won on their home grounds Monday evening 7-2.
Jim Dull, hurling for Rutherford, struck out seven and walked four, but two walks coupled with four errors in the fifth inning gave the home team six runs. Until the fifth Rutherford led 2-1.
Vion led off for North Arlington and was safe on an error, but was forced at second by Venancio. Gervasi struck out. Venancio scored when Smith was safe on an error. Torpey bounced out to the mound.
Costello flied out to third. More walked. Nourse singled, but Lioia and Vion struck out.
Triguero singled to open the third, but was left stranded when Allen flied to center, Parente whiffed, and Weist grounded out to second.
Venancio singled to open the home half. Gervasi forced Venancio. Smith fanned, and Torpey forced Gervasi.
Costello fanned in the bottom of the fourth. More grounded to second. Nourse walked, and Hay, in for Lioia, fanned.
In the fifth Larry Jobson, in for Carovillano, was hit by a pitch. Whitson and Triguero struck out. Allen flied to center.
Up to that time Rutherford led 2-1, but North Arlington came up with a big inning. Vion walked to start it. Venancio singled. Gervasi singled and was forced at second by Smith, Vion scoring. Torpey was out second to first, dull covering, and Venancio scoring. Costello walked. More singled, scoring Smith. Then Costello and More scored on Nourses single, and Nourse scored on a miscue. Hay fanned.
In the sixth Parente grounded out to second. Weist fanned. Nicol grounded out to short and it ended the game.
