On Saturday Rutherford Nationals met Lyndhurst Nationals before an overflow crowd at Rutherford L.L. Field. Greg Ehrhardt did the chucking for Rutherford against Tom Gash for Lyndhurst. Lyndhurst drew first blood in the 3rd on a walk and 2 singles. Johnny Boyles terrific defensive play at short prevented further scoring in this inning. Rutherford came back in the 4th with a singleton on Mike McKennas walk and Denny Botts single. Lyndhurst got a run in the 5th on an error, a single and a fly ball. Rutherford came roaring back in the 6th on Denny Botts second hit, Mason Carters double, 2 errors and a walk. This put Rutherford in front 3-2. In the bottom half of the 6th, Greg struck out the first batter; the second, a pinch hitter, singled to center. The next batter hit a slow roller to second. Jan Rosenberg elected to go to 1st for the second out. Tony Borgia, the centerfielder stepped into the batters box and every Rutherford fan was on their feet. Tony took a ball then 2 fast strikes. One pitch and it could be all over. Greg took the full windup, there was complete silence as the ball came over. Tony swung and hit a low line drive over second as La Russo crossed with the tie run. That ended the scoring until the bottom of the 8th when Lyndhursts Jim La Russo doubled to center. Pete Falco had an infield single and went to second when the bag was left uncovered. At this point Denny Bott relieved Ehrhardt. Denny struck out Borgia, the boy whose hit tied the game. Tom Gash, the pitcher, was next up. Lyndhurst fans were now screaming for the clincher. Denny threw two jug handle curves both coming over for strikes. But Tom was not to be denied. The next ball was a fast one and Gash won his own game with a single to center. It was an exciting well played ball game between two very good teams.
