( 1- 0) RUTHERFORD NL 2 3 1 3 0 0 -- 9 10 0 ( 0- 1) E RUTHERFORD 0 0 0 5 0 0 -- 5 4 4 W - Pollara (1-0) L - Devens (0-1)
An errorless defense, and speed-ball artist Frank Pollaras four hit, 11-whiff hurling combined with a ten-hit attack and four East Rutherford errors to give the Rutherford National League All-Stars a 9-5 victory over the All-Stars from across the tracks at Rutherford Field last Friday evening.
The outcome of the game was never in doubt after a walk to Steve Cox, an unsuccessful fielders choice and Pollaras single gave the home team a 2-0 bulge in the top of the first. Rutherford added three in the second, one in the third and three more in the fourth to lead 9-0.
Meantime, Pollaras fast ball was proving too much for the East Rutherford batters, who had seen nothing like it all season. He began to tire in the fourth, however, and the visitors reached him for all of their four hits, plus a base on balls, to score five runs.
Second-baseman Tommy Tanton and first-baseman Schweizer paced the errorless Nat offense. Tantons stop and throw on Lawtons grounder in the fifth was the fielding play of the game. Pollaras 3-for-4 led the home team offensively.
